When I was shopping around for a great restaurant menu design, I settled on a die-cut menu that was shaped like a cowboy hat. It went great with our rodeo theme but the cost did not justify the overall design. It was hard to hold and navigate. Further, it used clip-art images of food that doesn’t even look like our food. It looks like it came from a different restaurant altogether.

Now that I have learned my lesson, I know that function comes before form. We couldn’t afford to hand out those menus to every take-out customer and had to spend more money to have a black and white take-out menu designed. With our new system, we control the content of our menu dynamically and have more updated menus printed at low-cost every few months as we change with people’s tastes.

Restaurant Menu Design That Sells Your Food
We incorporated images of our food within our printed dine-in menu as well as our online menu. The benefit of this, is that I don't have to tell a customer that our seabass entrée is delicious. They can see a photo of all our dishes, and they look delicious. If only we could get the customers to smell it over the net or scratch and sniff our paper menus. Maybe that will come into play with our next restaurant menu design.

If a restaurant menu design is successful, you'll never hear, "Do you have…?" It will be easy to flip right to the correct page by looking at the photos or reading the headings on each page. What I think should be avoided at all cost is to clutter many items on the same page. I don't want to feel like I am reading a book when I am perusing a menu.
