Restaurant ordering has changed in many ways over the years. Originally, you needed to drive to your restaurant and place your order with a waiter or waitress. With the birth of fast food, it became possible to drive-thru a location and order and pay without ever leaving your car. This was remniscent of the 50’s style hamburger joint with rollerskating wait staff. Then with the popularity of phones and fax machines, it became convenient to call in an order or simply fax it in.
As the times continue to change, it seems we would be heading for a future where restaurant ordering is done by simply thinking of a food and having it magically appear. Until then, the natural progression of restaurant ordering seems to be online ordering. It is easier for the customer to sit down start ordering, stop, come back and finish the order. There is no need to keep someone on hold at the restaurant while you ask everyone in the family what they would like to order.
When Restaurant Ordering Goes Bad
I can’t tell you how many times I had an order delivered and it was the completely wrong order. I like to eat real Italian food and there are very few great restaurants in my area. Of these, most are owned and operated by first generation Italian families that have cooking in their blood. Unfortunately, I have trouble communicating my order over the phone on certain days. There is a definite language barrier.
One of these Italian restaurants finally went with an online restaurant ordering feature on their website and I have used it countless times with complete accuracy. Since it sends the order over via a clearly readable fax or email to the restaurant, there is little room for error if any.
